As a family we regularly spend time together studying scripture. Beyond spending time with scripture it can be important to “treasure up in your minds continually the words of life” (Doctrine & Covenants 84:85). Memorizing scripture is a great way to “treasure up” these words.
The LDS church has wonderful resources for memorizing scripture with a selection of scriptures. For our family, we’ve seen a need to have our own list of scriptures which focus primarily on charity and its central and foundational role. We’ve also sprinkled into this some scriptures which we feel can sometimes be mistreated to create an opportunity to specifically discuss other ways we might view these scriptures that can produce better fruits in our lives.
Beyond simply memorizing the scripture, we feel it is important for children (and adults) to ask what that scripture means to them. As our kids memorize these, we have a quick discussion with them asking them what they think about it, what they think it means, and how it can affect their lives. To make this fun (and encouraging) we regularly take our kids out to get Slurpees or candy as they memorize scriptures.
